Spent a lovely weekend in Meknes with a day trip to Volubilis. Meknes is less than an hour from Fes by train, and is one of the four imperial cities. Volubilis is an old Roman town with beautiful ruins and remnants. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a short taxi ride from Meknes. Both are absolutely beautiful. Meknes is like a smaller version of Fes with grand gates and walls, a big square for storytelling and performances, and a flea market where I bought a 5 Dirham Jilaba (trust me, that is awesome). Volubilis is breathtaking tucked in the mountains with wildflowers growing wild on walls and columns and mosaics preserved for centuries of the conquests of Hercules, kidnapping nypmphs, the goddess Diana, and more. We could spend days there learning and exploring. To say the least, it was a good trip to get our minds off of finding out the next day where our permanent sites placements would be!
